Admission requirements

Please find below a list of the admission requirements:

  • Bachelor or Master degree: Applicants are required to hold a recognized Bachelor or Master degree issued by a research University. Applicants with a degree from universities of applied sciences (HBO or Fachhochschule) are not eligible for the MBA programme;
  • Work experience: A minimum of three years of relevant business experience is required;
  • GMAT or GRE: The GMAT or GRE is compulsory for all applicants to the full-time programme. We require a minimum GMAT score of around 600 and a minimum analytical writing score of around 4.0. The required minimum GRE score is around 620 (quantitative) and around 4.0 for analytical writing (the combined score should be 1200 or higher). If you apply to the part-time programme you can opt to take our in-house SHL test as a substitute for the GMAT or GRE. You can ask the test institutions to send your score report directly to us (please find our institutions codes below).
  • English language proficiency: We require evidence of English language proficiency. Minimum TOEFL score: 100. Minimum IELTS score: 7.0. You can be exempted from this requirement if you are a native speaker of English, you have 2 years of international professional experience, you have taken an English-taught Bachelor or Master degree, (please note that your diploma or transcripts should mention that the language of instruction was English. If the language of instruction is not mentioned on the transcript or diploma, you will need to submit a letter from your higher education institute stating that the curriculum is completely taught in English), you obtained a Dutch VWO high school diploma.

Students with a Bachelor degree issued by a University of Applied Sciences (HBO)

Candidates holding a Bachelor degree from a Research University are directly eligible for admission to our programme. However, as of the academic year 2012-13, students with a Bachelor degree issued by a “University of Applied Sciences” (HBO) seeking admission to the Amsterdam MBA programme, either full time or part time, will require additional pre-Master coursework in order to attain eligibility.

Such pre-Master coursework should be aimed at boosting the candidate’s knowledge in the following areas:

  • Strategic Management and Marketing
  • Marketing Management
  • Strategy and Organisation
  • Quantitative Methods
  • Management Research Methods
  • Academic Project
  • Finance or HRM (one of these electives)

We would like to point out that the University of Amsterdam offers a pre-Master programme that covers these courses, either in Dutch or in English. Classes take place on Fridays during the day. For more information please click on the link below under “pre-Master programme Business Studies” (we apologize that at present the information on the website is in Dutch only).

Alternatively, if you are currently living outside the Netherlands, you might look for pre-Master courses in these areas at a local university.

In case you are not sure if the institution where you studied falls into the category of “University of Applied Sciences” (as opposed to a “Research University”) please send an email to admissions-abs@uva.nl and we will find out for you.

The Amsterdam Business School institutions codes:

TOEFL = 6739
GMAT = 0500
GRE = 6739
