Other scholarships and grants
The Dutch Ministry of Education and Sciences offers scholarships covering costs of living expenses within the framework of cultural agreements between the Netherlands and other countries. Information is available from the Dutch embassy or consulate in your country or via www.nuffic.nl
You can also contact the Institute for Higher Education in your own country. Often there are funds and foundations available for students planning to study abroad. More information can also be found on the back of the application form.
Living costs and accommodation
Living costs in the Netherlands can vary considerably. In general, living costs for a single student are between € 400 and € 500 per month, accommodation excluded. Spread out over the year there will be additional expenses of € 600-800 on books.
International students can choose to live in the student accommodation of UvA; the student flats are spread out through Amsterdam – we do not have a campus. Students can rent private rooms (a.k.a. singles), shared rooms and doubles.
- A private (single) room means a private (bed) room, not necessarily private facilities (kitchen and/or bathroom and/or living room).
- A shared room means that one living space is shared between two (same sex) students. Shared rooms usually share the facilities between the two tenants, but sometimes with more.
- A double is a studio or apartment that is rented out to couples. All doubles have private facilities.
Rent varies from € 325 to € 600 and includes utilities (water, electricity).
We strongly recommend students to make use of the student accommodation, because the housing market in Amsterdam is extremely tight. The student accommodation is rented through housing corporation De Key, Short Stay Facilities. You can take a look at the rooms on: http://www.shortstay.dekey.nl/. The Universiteit van Amsterdam will make a room reservation with De Key, Short Stay Facilities and De Key will e-mail you the address of the room that is reserved for you. From that point onwards the rent procedure will be taken care of by De Key, Short Stay Facilities.
Students should be able to manage on about € 1,000 per month. We think you will find this somewhat more reasonable than the living expenses in most European financial centres. For example LBS estimates costs in London, including accommodation, as about € 1,800 per month.
